inspiration - johnny kelly

i have been looking around at work that inspires me, and i recently came along the work of johnny kelly.

johnny is originally from dublin but now works in london. he produces both motion and print work, and i find his work really nice. he keeps everything very simple, and i really like his style. i love the way he keeps in the hand cut and made style, everything looks real and organic.

Procrastination from Johnny Kelly on Vimeo.

this is johnny’s graduation film from the Royal College of Art, 2007 for his MA in Animation.

‘Procrastination’ is an investigative and exploratory hands-on gloves-off study into the practice of putting things off’. Sometimes the only way to get something done is to do two dozen other things first.

i love the way he has combined footage with animation, for example at 01:02, the mix of ‘real’ materials is done beautifully and modestly.

“Het Klokhuis” Opening titles from Johnny Kelly on Vimeo.

“Het Klokhuis” End titles from Johnny Kelly on Vimeo.

these two videos are stop motion title and end sequences for the dutch science show “Het Klokhuis” (The Apple Core). it is hollands oldest youth television show, ‘covering everything from the history of dinosaurs to how an iPhone is made’.

artofthetitle.com describe it as “a hybrid of hand crafted frame-by-frame animation and cleanly rendered apples with sprouting science experiments encapsulated like the seed of an idea about to be discovered.”

IOC “Olympic Spirit” from Johnny Kelly on Vimeo.

i really like this piece that johnny did for the International Olympic Committee. it made by photographing a series of over 300 individual paper-card collages. i really like the look this gives, and im going to at least look in to using techniques that look as beautiful as this in my project.

The Seed from Johnny Kelly on Vimeo.

‘the seed’ is a “two-minute animated voyage through nature’s life cycle, following the trials and tribulations of a humble apple seed.” same as the olympic spirit piece, i really love the look of this work. this making of video below really says alot about the attention to detail, the effort and the thought that goes in to every little thing in the video:
